Our minimum order is $40. Whilst we would prefer not to have a minimum order amount, the cost of sending out insulated boxes or cooler bags are too high to allow lower orders.

All you need to know about Pho

Pho, pronounced “fuh”—not foe, is a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. It first appeared in Vietnam in the 20th century and became so popular that it is now considered to be the national dish of Vietnam.

There’s some debate over the history of pho. Most people agree it originated around Hanoi in Northern Vietnam. Some say it was adopted from the French beef stew, pot au feu, while others consider it has Chinese influences. No matter where it came from, pho quickly gained popularity as a street food.

After Vietnam was divided in 1954, people who left the Northern region brought pho with them to the South, and over time regional variations of pho emerged.

What is Pho?

The name Pho refers to the flat rice noodles the dish it is served with and to really enjoy Pho, it is important to understand what each element brings to the overall dish.

Broth: Traditional pho broth is made from bones and meat simmered slowly with charred onion and ginger for warmth and flavoured with aromatic spices. We have created a vegan broth with the same principles.

Rice noodles: These flat noodles are delicate in texture and usually cooked separately to prevent them from being overcooked and gluggy. We recommend removing the noodles from cooking when they still have some bite as they will soften further in the broth. For a clear bowl of pho, it is also good to rinse your noodles after cooking to remove the starch.

Protein: The protein of the dish is usually cooked separately and then added on top of the noodles before pouring over the hot broth. The exception to this is very thinly sliced steak which is added raw and cooked by pouring boiling hot broth directly on top.

Toppings: Added after everything else, this is the fun (and best) part—you can get creative with your toppings to your taste. If sharing the meal, you can set up a pho bar for everyone to make their own bowl and add your garnishes to the middle of the table, just like they do it Vietnam.

How do you pronounce Pho?

Pho is pronounced fur rather than foe.
